When Shruti Samanta Halder, an engineering graduate from Kalyani Government Engineering College in India, joined Global Mentorship Initiative (GMI) as a student, she was looking for clarity and confidence. After starting her career and then taking a brief pause, she reached out for support to re-enter the workforce. With the guidance of her mentor, Riddhi Chauhan, Director of Shared Services – Assurance and Governance at Worley, she found exactly what she was looking for and a role at the same company as her mentor.

Like many young professionals, Shruti struggled to turn strong academic and early industry experience into a compelling story. She explains, “I often felt unsure about how to present my skills and stay aligned with current market expectations. Riddhi guided me in refining my CV, preparing for interviews, and structuring my job search. She also informed me about open opportunities at Worley, and when a suitable opportunity arose, helped me prepare for the interview. Her guidance enabled me to put my best foot forward – so that I could showcase my strengths with confidence. I believe that support helped me secure a role at Worley.”

Riddhi sees this common hurdle for young talent. “Young people often face an overwhelming flood of information online, making it difficult to chart a clear path. The key lies in aligning short- and mid-term goals with long-term aspirations and regularly evaluating progress to stay on course. Structured guidance and mentorship can make a significant difference.”

Worley, a GMI Partner since 2023 through its Worley Foundation, empowers its people to grow their careers their way – by sharing knowledge, developing others, and making a real impact through Foundation projects. GMI’s structured career readiness mentorship matches volunteer mentors like Riddhi with students preparing for their job search.

Riddhi explains: “Helping young professionals to be successful is something I’m passionate about. Being able to do so via the Worley Foundation/GMI partnership has been a privilege – and I’m delighted that my support helped Shruti through this process.”

“Returning to the professional world after a career pause is no small feat, and Shruti has embraced this challenge with remarkable courage and determination,” Riddhi added.

“Shruti’s journey with us has just begun, and we are excited to witness her continued growth and the impact she will create. Her story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the value of embracing new opportunities.”

Now part of the Worley team, Shruti looks forward to making an impact for other students like her: “I’m excited to grow in my new role. This opportunity gives me the chance to contribute meaningfully and balance my personal and professional goals. I would love to support someone the way I was supported. Becoming a mentor in the future would be both an honor and a way to give back.”

At GMI, stories like Shruti’s show how mentorship creates tangible pathways to workforce equity and job-ready talent.

Global Mentorship Initiative (GMI) is proud to announce that 3M has renewed its partnership, marking the third year of its collaboration to help under-resourced students.

“Since our partnership began in 2023, 3M has helped to expand GMI’s reach and impact across more than 100 countries.  Nearly 100 3M volunteers across 27 countries are making a difference with GMI through mentorship,” shares Jon Browning, GMI CEO. “3M’s impact has been especially prominent on the African continent, where nearly two-thirds of 3M-sponsored mentees reside.”

GMI’s tech-enabled career readiness online mentorship matches volunteer mentors with under-resourced students who are transitioning from post-secondary education to their first career role. The mentorship is designed to bridge the gap between graduation and first career opportunity for students from global communities.

“Partners like 3M are vital for the work that GMI does,” continues Jon. “Not only do they ensure GMI mentorships remain free for students, but they also help us connect to skilled volunteers who are empowering the global leaders of tomorrow. We are so thankful for 3Mers who have already joined the GMI mentor community and eager to welcome more as our partnership grows.”

Global Mentorship Initiative (GMI) will begin offering its career readiness mentorship program in Spanish, thanks to generous support from the Baker Hughes Foundation. GMI was recently awarded $100,000 in grant funding by the Foundation to support the launch and implementation of the new program.

“The addition of a Spanish-language program marks a significant milestone for GMI. We have long recognized the need to support students across Latin America in their primary language. In fact, our youth partners have been requesting Spanish mentorships for some time,” states GMI CEO Jon Browning. “This is why we are so grateful for the generosity of The Baker Hughes Foundation. The grant will allow us to establish the Spanish-language program and reach thousands of students across Latin America and displaced learners emigrating to the US and Canada.”

The GMI mentorship program is currently available in English and French. It follows a structured and easy-to-follow curriculum that can be adapted for each unique combination of student and mentor. All mentorships cover the same content to ensure measurable impact for students and supportive guidance for mentors. This program allows mentorship pairs to build affinity organically, fostering true human connection that transcends difference.

“GMI has a committed community of hundreds of repeat mentors, many of whom are Baker Hughes employees themselves. They are eager to engage with Latinx youth to help them get their first job,” shares Jon. “The growth of our partnership with Baker Hughes highlights what is possible when employees come together to give back to their communities. The collective support of Baker Hughes mentors and the Baker Hughes Foundation brings us closer to achieving this long-awaited goal. Together, we are making life-changing impact for the next generation of leaders.”

The GMI Spanish-language program will be available in September 2025. At that time, students will be able to submit a mentorship application in Spanish and be matched in a Spanish-speaking mentor. The full suite of GMI mentorship materials will also be available in Spanish.
